School Streets is coming to West Sechelt!
For four mornings and afternoons this fall, the street in front of the school belongs to kids — on foot, on bikes, on scooters. Here’s everything your family needs to know.
8:30–9:30am & 2:30–3:30pm on School Streets days, Mason Road
WHY IT MATTERS
WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT IT
Safer arrivals
No through-traffic means kids can walk, roll, and play in the street without the usual friction at the school entrance.
Better for kids
Active travel to school improves physical health, mental wellbeing, and how kids arrive — ready to learn, not stressed.
Community energy
Partner booths, active travel challenges, and shared space turn drop-off from a chore into a moment worth showing up for.
We'll learn together
This is a pilot. Data collected before, during, and after will shape what comes next — your experience matters.
HOW TO GET THERE
Bike Bus
Guided group ride each morning — adults lead, kids roll in together
Walk, bike, or scoot from home
On your own or with family — most students are within 10 minutes
Walking school bus
Meet at a nearby spot and walk in as a group with neighbours
Arrive in 5
Drop off at one of 4 nearby spots and kids walk the final block — still counts
IN THE ZONE
Something for every kid
The closure zone is a celebration space with something at every energy level — from calm corners to active challenges. Kids find their pace; families find their people.
Calm corner | All ages–low key
A quieter spot in the zone for kids who want to ease into the morning. No pressure, just play. Bubbles, Board Games, and Twister.
Friendly games | All ages–medium energy
Drop-in pickup games on the stree–no teams required, no score kept. Jump in, play a few points, head to class. Badminton, and Street hockey.
Little riders' zone| K-3–nested in school driveway
A dedicated, supervised loop sheltered in the school driveway–the perfect space for younger kids to roll, practise balance, and build confidence at their own speed. Scooters, Bikes, Supervised & Safe.
Active Travel Challenge | Grades 4-7–high energy
Track your active trips, take on daily movement challenges, and climb the class leaderboard. The more you walk, bike, or scoot during pilot week, the more your class earns. Daily challenges, Class leaderboard, and Active travel tracking.
Prizes & treats for everyone
Students earn prizes for active participation–and the top class in the Active Travel Challenge takes home something special. Treats on hand each day for kids who arrive actively.
QUICK ANSWERS
A 250-foot stretch of Mason Road in front of the school, from the Norwest Bay intersection to the south edge of school property. Side streets and neighbouring driveways stay open.
Monday Sept 28, Tuesday Sept 29, Thursday Oct 1, and Friday Oct 2 — 8:30–9:30am and 2:30–3:30pm each day. Wednesday Sept 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a school holiday — no School Streets that day.
No problem. Use one of four “Arrive in 5” drop-off spots nearby — your child walks the last block. These are signed and supported.
Families with mobility challenges can access the school via the Norwest Bay entrance. Contact the school in advance and we’ll make sure you’re sorted.
No — this is a 4-day pilot. What we learn this fall will inform what happens next. Your feedback is part of the process.
Trained volunteers manage each barricade, with walkie-talkies to coordinate emergency access. The closure is permitted by the District of Sechelt.
Games and activities at every energy level, a dedicated K–3 riders’ zone in the school driveway, the Grades 4–7 Active Travel Challenge, partner booths, and treats. See the “In the zone” section above for the full picture.
